The park is unique in nature, making it difficult to specify any particular time as being the best time. Kanha has three major seasons - the rainy, the cold & the hot.
The rainy Season (Mid June - October)
The monsoonal showers in late June kills the heat & the vegetation turns into intense green. A thick undercoat starts covering the forest floor & the leaves on the decidous trees unfold. This the fawing period for the herbivores. But the park is closed for visitors in this season. |

The climate in Kanha National Park is extreme, with summer (April-June) temperatures rising to 43oC.
The monsoons are from mid-June to September when an average of 1,800 mm of rain falls.
Winters (November-February) can be quite cold, when frost often covers the meadows.

In central India, the barasingha has disappeared from all but Kanha National Park. From an estimated three thousand in the early fifties, within a decade, less than a hundred survived. In 1970 the number touched an all time low of 66.
Concerted efforts at saving this species have led to the count crossing the five hundred mark. This species of Barasingha known as Cervus duvauceli branderi is found only in Kanha National Park |

There are two safaris a day in Kanha National Park, one starting in the morning and the other late in the afternoon. While one can take one's petrol driven vehicles (diesel vehicles are not allowed), the best way to see the park and its inhabitants is by 4x4 open jeep. 4 wheel drive jeeps called "Gypsys" (which seat up to six visitors) are available for hire and are the most convenient mode of transport in Kanha National Park. |
